RISK – Being struck by moving plant/machinery/vehicles
If elimination is not possible and a worker must enter the operating zone, the activity must be thoroughly planned with the risk of plant and people interaction highlighted as a significant risk.
Controls must be implemented in accordance with the hierarchy of control.
Eliminate the need to enter the operating zone by:
- Erecting barricading around the operating zone and prohibiting access
- Standing machinery down whilst a worker works within the operating zone
- Waiting until mobile plant has moved out of that area
- Ensuring pedestrian routes are delineated and directed away from operating zones
If the worker is required to work inside the operating zone whilst mobile plant is operating as part of their role, the most effective way to control the risk of plant and people interaction is by using a combination of controls.
Install physical exclusion zones around the operating plant.
Erect clear signage warnings workers that they are approaching an operating zone. Restrict access to essential personnel only.
Use spotters to establish and maintain effective communication between workers and operators.
Operators, Spotters and Workers must establish an effective means of communication prior to anyone entering the operating zone.
Use audible and visible alarms to identify moving plant.
This video has been created by WorkCover QLD and explains ways to manage the interaction between powered mobile plant and pedestrians.
Plan the direction the plant moves, so operator’s visibility is not restricted.
