5.3 Prevent a person and objects from falling through penetrations, shafts and risers

RISK – Falls of people and objects

Examples of controlling open penetrations include casting in mesh, installing load rated perimeter screens or handrails with mesh infill panels or structural grade plywood designed and manufactured in accordance with The Work at Height Procedure.

 

 

 

Penetrations, shafts and risers must be controlled immediately after being formed to prevent persons and objects from falling.

 

 

Penetration controls in order of their effectiveness:

  1. Reduce the number and size of penetrations and risers during the design phase of the project if possible.
  2. Cast in mesh during construction
  3. Install perimeter protection, e.g. screens or handrails with mesh infill panels
  4. Install robust penetration covers

Penetration covers

Penetration covers must be robust, securely fastened so as to prevent dislodgment and/or easy removal (e.g. screwed or bolted, not nailed), and have appropriate signage.

 

Penetration covers in walkways or trafficable areas must be of a design that minimises trip hazards.

 

All penetration controls must:

  • Be designed to prevent dislodgement
  • Be designed to withstand any loads that may be imposed during construction
  • Control the risk of both people and material falling
  • Be securely fixed and marked clearly with words similar to “Danger. Penetrations below”
