6.A Be fit for work

RISK – Being unfit to work

Fitness to work is when a person can complete a task safely without presenting a risk to themselves, their colleagues, the company, or a third party.

 

 

 

Examples of being fit to work include not being impaired by:

  • alcohol or other drugs,
  • medication,
  • temporary conditions,
  • physical limitations,
  • cognitive and/or psycho-social issues

 

 

All people must notify their manager/supervisor when they believe they might not be fit for work.

 

 

If you are unsure whether or not you are fit to work, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I under the influence of alcohol or other drugs?
  • Am I taking any prescribed medication that might affect my cognitive abilities?
  • Will my mental state have a negative impact on me competently and safely perform my work?
  • Am I physically unable to perform my work adequately and safely?
  • Was the amount of sleep I had last night insufficient?

If you answered yes to any of the above, refer to GMR 6.B.

 

 

Some prescription medication labels advise that fitness for work can be impaired.  If you are taking prescription / over the counter medication, this should be declared to your supervisor prior to screening.

 

 

 

An alcohol testing unit may be made available for self-testing in a private location. 

 

Any person who believes they may be affected by AOD is encouraged to conduct a self/ voluntary test prior to commencing work
