RISK – Polluting waterways
Store, handle, use and dispose in accordance with the relevant safety data sheet (SDS) and local legislation.
- Washout facilities must be in place and used for cleaning plant and equipment, concrete, paint or other environmentally hazardous substances.
- Ensure washout facilities are not positioned near, or drain to surface water systems (drains / culverts / creeks).
- Washout facilities prevent contamination of soil and waterways and ensure wastewater can be contained and disposed of appropriately.
- Concrete slurry that has been rinsed into the dedicated washout facility can be collected when dry and then recycled.
- A well prepared concrete washout ready for concreting works to commence. For more temporary sites, a simple square timber frame lined with plastic is quick to build and easy to disassemble and reset.
- As a minimum, chemical bunds must be 10% larger than the volume of the largest container. The bund should also be sheltered to avoid it filling with rainwater.
- Chemicals and fuel must be labelled and stored in bunded areas in accordance with the safety data sheet (SDS).
